Vocational Programs

Work Evaluation

The purpose of the work evaluation program is to determine:

  • the physical, mental and/or vocational potential of the individual
  • the feasibility and necessity for placement in competitive employment
  • realistic vocational objectives
  • vocational strengths and weaknesses

A vocational specialist will have the client participate in situational assessments, work samples and vocational testing to help assess the client's vocational interests, skills and abilities. In addition to earning a paycheck while going through job training, the client will also be assisted with case management services to address his or her individual needs.

Work Adjustment

The purpose of work adjustment is to help the client establish and follow through on vocational goals while still in the job training program. The client, along with the vocational specialist, will determine the most appropriate goals and the best way to achieve those goals. Such goals may include:

  • Improving attendance
  • Enhancing social interaction or problem-solving skills
  • Following workshop rules
  • Increasing stamina

Furthermore, job training skills are taught which can include money management, time management, coping skills etc. Once the client completes the work adjustment phase, the vocational specialist and sponsor, along with the client, will determine the next appropriate step which can include community placement or a recommendation for other services.

Admission Criteria

  • The client has a physical, mental or emotional handicap, which prevents the client from obtaining employment in the community.
  • The client is at least sixteen-years-old and can take care of his or her personal living needs.
  • The disabling condition is stable as documented by a professional such as a doctor or psychiatrist.
  • The client has sufficient control of his or her behavior so as to not endanger themselves or others.

If a client is not seeking supportive services, such as counseling, upon applying for job training, a recommendation for services may be made.

Vocational Rehabilitation

Vocational Rehabilitation is one funding source that often sponsors a client in the vocational programs. It is the client's responsibility to contact his or her V.R. Counselor to set up a meeting to determine eligibility into the program.

Clients who are not currently involved with Vocational Rehab, and live in the Evansville area, can contact them at (812) 425-1367 to request services.
